Round Square

Rothesay Netherwood School is a full member school of Round Square: an international association of schools who share a philosophy of education which extends beyond classroom academics. The philosophical foci of Round Square schools are expressed in the organization’s guiding acronym of “I.D.E.A.L.S.”: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmental Awareness, Adventure, Leadership, and Service.

Round Square programs are manifest both on campus and beyond. Within the school, students of all grade levels may propose ideas promoting any of the IDEALS to the Head of School, thus bringing awareness and/or change to the whole school community. Students then collaborate on projects through a student-run Round Square committee. Student-driven leadership is central to the operation of Round Square schools, based on the premise that, if our students are to be the guardians of tomorrow’s world, they must be given the opportunity to practice leading it today.

Beyond the campus, students are encouraged to broaden their horizons by volunteering in community service projects and exchanges. Rothesay Netherwood School students are currently involved in a number of local service projects supporting: Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Nature Trust of New Brunswick, Project Linus, the Atlantic Coastal Action Program, Adopt-A-Highway, the Saint John Regional Hospital, literacy programs, food banks and local seniors’ homes. Even further afield, RNS students have the opportunity to join with students of other Round Square schools, forming a volunteer team on an international service project each year, undertaking projects of significant infrastructure development in a community.
