Middle School Science

Grade 6 Science
Students taking Grade 6 Science will study five major units on Scientific Investigation: Scientific Method, Biodiversity, Matter and Molecules, Air and Flight, and Space as part of the Middle School Integrating Science and Technology (IST) Program. By the end of this course students will be able to use the scientific method to answer questions; understand how to conduct a lab and write a basic lab report; understand the basics of different forms of matter; test substances to determine their densities; understand how the properties of air apply to flight; design and construct flying devices; understand the physical characteristics and nature of motion of objects in our solar system; identify biodiversity in a range of ecosystems; use models and simulations to explore the motion of space bodies; and discuss the application of technology in space study.
 
Grade 7 Science
Students taking Grade 7 Science will study five major units on Scientific Methods, Environmental Interactions,  Water; Structures-Form and function; and Substances and Mixtures; as part of the Middle School Integrating Science and Technology (IST) Program. By the end of this course students will be able to evaluate the interactions within ecosystems which support the transfer of energy and cycling of matter; suggest ways by which we can change our actions and technologies to better protect our environment; consider the form and function of a structure and the forces that act on it; identify the characteristics of good design materials for making structures stable and strong; consider the characteristic lifespan of structures in making responsible decisions; evaluate the role of water in influencing weather and climate; discuss the importance of monitoring water systems to maintain water supply and quality; and appreciate their role as stewards of our water systems in order to ensure their sustainability; and evaluate the benefits of heat technologies in making responsible choices. Students will also participate in a Science Fair Investigation where they will work independently through the scientific method and present their findings to teachers, parents and their peers. 
 
Grade 8 Science
Students taking Grade Eight Science will study five major units on Scientific Method, Cells, Forces in Motion, fluidity, and lights & optics. By the end of this course students will be able to discuss the cell theory as it applies to plant and animal cells; understand the cellular processes which sustain all living things; explain the emergent properties of organs and organ systems and the impact of research in cell biology; evaluate the concepts of forces and motion including Newton's 3 Laws, speed, acceleration, the difference between weight and mass; and understand gravity and G-forces; understand and explain work and energy. Students will also study fluids and density, light and optics. Students will also participate in a Science Fair Investigation or ExploraVision Competition where they will work independently through the scientific method and present their findings to teachers, parents and their peers.
 
Middle School Engineering & Design
The focus of the Engineering & Design class is to give students a comprehensive and rigorous science, math, and engineering education to prepare them for high school study and future careers in these areas.  Students work through a project-based, technology-focused curriculum that allows students to develop their critical thinking skills through scientific experiments and solving real-world problems. There is also a focus on collaborative group-work, communicating your ideas verbally, in writing, and through technology, and creativity and innovation.
