Hannah Darroch - Flute

A native of New Zealand, Hannah Darroch is currently completing her Doctor of Music at the Schulich School of Music under the supervision of Timothy Hutchins. She holds a Master of Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she was Teaching Assistant to Christina Jennings. She was also a member of their resident Wind Quintet, who had success at the 2012 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

 

She has worked regularly with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington, under conductors including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jacques Lacombe, Edo de Waart, Simone Young, Sir Andrew Davis, Sir James MacMillan, and Nicholas McGegan. She has performed alongside international artists including Renée Fleming, Håkan Hardenberger, Andrés Cárdenes, and Diana Krall. She was also Principal Flute and a Corporal in the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band before relocating to Montréal.

 

Hannah has had years of experience in the recording studio; performing flute, alto flute, and piccolo on numerous recordings including The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies in 2014, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in 2013, and the premiere of Frank Ticheli's Songs of Life and Love on Klavier Records in the United States in 2012.

 

Hannah is a recipient of the 2017 New Zealand/Aotearoa Music Scholarship, the 2016 Dame Malvina Major Arts Excellence Award, and she also received the Graduate Excellence Award from McGill University. An advocate for music education and social change, Hannah was a cohort member of the 2018 Global Leaders Program, run by the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. This nine-month program brought together 35 rising musical change-makers from around the world to build skills in civic leadership, teaching artistry, and social entrepreneurship.
