The O'Brien Family came and wowed the audience and now we have three exciting concerts left to go in the RNS Community Performance Series: Trio L'Express (November 20),
Mike Biggar (February 19) and Port City 5 (April 9). The RNS Community Performance Series
is graciously emceed by Hance Colburne.

About the Community Performance Series

One of the ways that RNS connects with the greater community is through the aptly named Community Performance Series. This series was launched in 2017 as an opportunity to provide the greater community with high-calibre entertainment in a beautiful setting at our on-campus, 206-seat Théâtre Susan B. Ganong.

Our first concert of the 2018-2019 season was held on Friday, September 28th, with The O'Brien Family from British Columbia. These musical siblings - Corman, Fintan, and our very own faculty member Millie O'Brien, wowed the audience with their powerful, energetic and performance. We hope to have them back!

Coming up soon, on Tuesday, November 20th, Montreal-based Trio L'Express will entertain the audience with classical music beautifully performed on the flute, piano, and violin. And locals will certainly recognize and appreciate the soulful sounds of Mike Biggar, who will take to the stage on Tuesday, February 19th. The season will close with Saint John's clarinet quintet, Port City 5 on Tuesday, April 9th.

Mike Biggar - February 19th

Known for his intense, roiling live performance, signature soaring vocals and warm on-stage humour, soulful, New Brunswick-based roots artist Mike Biggar is a definitive natural live performer. Add to this an unmistakably gutsy, bluesy delivery, reflective of his own childhood roots in gospel music that still seep through the seams of his mainstream career. Then underline it all with infectious melodies and compelling, soul-baring lyrics, and it becomes clear why Biggar is described as a unique breed of singer-songwriter. He unfurls his music with a compelling conviction that is distinct, effective, and even a bit spiritual. In an often contrived genre, he dispels pretense with a disarming warmth that disappears the distance between stage and listener, drawing you in to be a part of the stories he tells. High-energy vocals steam down the line like a soulful roots-inspired freight train, even as his performance punctuates his acclaimed songs with raw honesty. And the deep imprint he leaves on listeners confirms why his music is marked by both acclaim and awards.
Following the 2017 release of his third album GO ALL IN (Busted Flat Records) and a banner year of touring and publicity, Biggar’s latest offering received the 2017 Music New Brunswick Award for 'Blues Artist of the Year' and the 2018 East Coast Music Award for ‘Blues Recording of the Year’ in May 2018. These are added to his twice previous Music NB Award wins (2014, 2011), an East Coast Music Award (2012) and numerous other nominations and acclaim.

2018-2019 sees Biggar expanding his reach to new territories and markets with bookings throughout Canada, the USA, and Europe. www.mikebiggar.com

Port City 5 - April 9th

Port City 5 is a clarinet quintet (string quartet + clarinet) made up of Teaching Artists of Sistema NB and members of Tutta Musica, a professional orchestra of Sistema NB artists - Danielle Girard, violin, Rachel Kidd, violin, viola, and composer, Aaron McFarlane, violin and viola, Michael DePasquale, cello, and Andrew George, clarinet and arranger.

Port City 5 is becoming known for pairing pieces from the standard classical repertoire with new arrangements of popular music.  They find that the pairings breathe new life into the concert experience and also allow them to share their personal favourites in all genres of music.

Past performances have included parings of Mozart and David Bowie, Brahms and Radiohead, Osvaldo Golijov and Leonard Cohen as well as original compositions by Rachel Kidd and Richard Kidd.

The O'Brien Family - Past Concert

The O’Brien Family has lived in Canada since 2004, when they left England for a new life on Vancouver Island. Over the years, the family has made three albums, played hundreds of shows, and even toured Europe. Their sound is a blend of luscious harmonies and great songs, played in a folksy bluegrass style. The family loves to create a fun and energized environment in their shows where the audience is strongly encouraged to sing along.

The band is made up of siblings Millie, Cormac, and Fintan. Their father, Paul, who usually performs with the family, is currently touring Germany and will miss the RNS concert. In addition to collaborating with his family, the youngest O'Brien, Fintan, has a successful solo career. Go to www.fintanobrienmusic.com to learn more about this talented young artist.
