RNS Launches OMG Changemakers Series

Rothesay, NB, Canada, November 6, 2019 - Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS) launched the OMG Changemakers Speaker Series Monday at Shadow Lawn Inn. Looking smart in their school ties and blazers, 25 senior school students had the opportunity to mix and mingle with eight prominent New Brunswick business leaders throughout this unique speaker series luncheon. The noon hour event included an inspirational talk from HotSpot Inc. CEO, Phillip Curley, a question and answer period, and small round-table conversations with the business mentors. Over the course of two hours, students heard about an entrepreneur’s journey of resilience, about business leaders’ inspirational career stories, as well as lessons learned on their paths to success.

"The OMG Speaker series is a really neat way to interact with real-world business leaders and bridge the gap between the high school and real-world experience. I gained a lot of valuable insight and made new connections," says one RNS student in attendance.

"This speaker series offers our RNS high school students a unique opportunity that goes above and beyond academics which will help prepare them for their next steps along their development journey," says Drew Barbour, Partner, Advisory Services at EY. "A key lesson I shared with the group is the importance of mastering the art of storytelling. What one knows is very important but to learn how to articulate what one knows in a way that engages and inspires others is truly powerful."

This experiential learning event marked the first in a series supported by Owens MacFadyen Group and was the brainchild of OMG Wealth Management Consultant, Jeff Owens. A graduate of Rothesay Netherwood School, Mr. Owens says he wishes that he could have had the opportunity to interact with business leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs while in High School.

“This speaker series encourages students to make good decisions about where they want to end up in life,” said Mr. Owens. “By sharing stories of exceptional leaders and the resilience they demonstrated on the path to success, we hope to inspire students to make a difference.”

RNS Head of School, Paul McLellan says that the speaker series “is designed to provide RNS students the opportunity to engage with business leaders and innovators.

"With the launch of the RNS Entrepreneurship Signature Program, it felt like the right time to implement Jeff’s vision." he says. “We believe that youth are at the heart of solving some of the core issues facing our world. We are endeavouring to equip these young people with skills and competencies that will serve them well in the future.”

In addition to Mr. Curley and Mr. Owens, the following New Brunswick business leaders were on hand to engage in meaningful conversations and share their experiences and expertise with the RNS students: Tim Ryan, Principal at Fundy Engineering & Consulting Ltd.; Ryan Mitchell, Vice President at Saint John Energy; Drew Barbour, Partner, Advisory Services at EY; Robyn Tingley, Founder and CEO of GlassSKY; James Crosby, President at Crosby Molasses Co. Ltd.; and Brian Flood, Serial Entrepreneur.
