Two New Brunswick students win $100,000 Loran Award

Two New Brunswick students won a life-changing scholarship last week, joining an elite group of civic-minded young Canadians who were recognized for their hard work in school and their communities.

Heather Chisholm from Quispamsis and Dhanishta Ambwani from Fredericton are two of 36
Loran Scholars for 2020. The Loran Award is a four-year comprehensive undergraduate scholarship totalling $100,000.

"It feels really cool [to win]," Ambwani said. "I'm really glad to be part of the community."

There were 5,194 applicants from across Canada for this year's awards. Chisholm, who attends Rothesay Netherwood School, and Ambwani, who attends Leo Hayes High School, were two of 88 finalists chosen to attend national selections in Toronto from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.

The two-day interview process looked for candidates who demonstrated a wide-breadth of academic and extra-curricular interests, commitment to leadership, integrity and a high level of personal autonomy.

"All the finalists were really nice," Ambwani said. "The interviewers tried to get to know me."

Chisholm has spearheaded numerous projects, the biggest being Schools for Schools, a three-year task where she organized the redesign of two shipping containers into classrooms and arranged for them to be sent to students in Dominica.

The containers are finally making their way to students this spring, Chisholm said, and she's elated to see her hard work pay off.

"It’s been a long journey," she previously told the Telegraph-Journal. "It’s been challenging, but I’m so excited to meet the kids."

Ambwani has stayed busy by founding the model UN at her school and volunteering at her local hospital. She also spends her time organizing and hosting art workshops. She said she's considering three universities after winning her scholarship.

"I'm still deciding between Dalhousie, McGill, and Western," she said. "I'm excited to see what comes next."
