Meet Katie Cameron '20

Our next senior in our series is two-year senior Katie Cameron. Katie is a steady defensive defenseman from Riverview, New Brunswick who possesses an incredible drive for improvement and success. Katie arrived in Grade 11 and remained focused on her goals despite a few setbacks and injuries. Katie is a remarkable student-athlete who achieves as high in the classroom as she does on the ice. Enjoy her story!

I have been playing hockey since I was five years old. Similar to many of the other girls on the team, I started playing because I wanted to be like my older sister. Since I can remember, I used to go to the rink with her, hang around all her hockey friends and want to be just like her. Eventually, after hanging around the rink enough and falling in love with the atmosphere of the game, I decided to give it a try myself. I was hooked instantly and have never looked back.

I think my style of game is unique because I truly love being a defensive defenseman. While many others in my position love to rush the puck and create scoring opportunities, I get my satisfaction from a big penalty kill, shot block or shut down on a 1 on 1. I love working with our goalies Cassie and Alexi and getting energy from strong defensive plays. This element of my game has developed over the past few years and I have come to be very proud of it.

I think my teammates would say that I am a very caring person. Early in the year, I tried really hard to make sure all the girls on the team felt welcome and checked in on them if they were feeling homesick. This is something I experienced a lot my self last year. I think they would also say that I work hard and would do anything for the team.

One of my favourite memories in my hockey career so far has been my experience at the Canada Winter Games. The whole experience was incredible, but I will never forget the atmosphere of our game against tournament favourite, Team Quebec. We scored first and the arena and the bench erupted. It was an incredible atmosphere to play in and I will never forget it.

Next year, I plan to attend Dalhousie University and suit up for the Tigers. I am looking forward to studying Sciences and working towards a career in Nursing and hopefully become a Nurse Practitioner.

If I could give advice to a young student-athlete at RNS, I would encourage them to live in the moment. Regardless of the injuries you might experience or the setbacks you might endure, work hard and things will work out in the end.

If I could say Thank You to anyone for impacting my playing career and educational experience at RNS, I would thank my parents, Steve and Charmaine. Coming to RNS was a big challenge for me, I was really homesick in my first year and found myself dealing with injuries on top of that. My parents were always there to pick up the phone, calm me down and motivate me to move forward. They have sacrificed so much for me, and I will never be able to repay them or thank them enough for all they have done for me.

Coach Blackmore and Coach McCallum extend a sincere Thank You to Katie for her commitment and dedication to the Prep Girls Hockey program during her time at RNS. They go on to remind her that she will be dearly missed next year, but that they look forward to following your success as a Tiger for the next 4-5 years.

Welcome to the RNS Prep Girls Hockey Alumni Family Katie!
