Meet Arianne Roy '20

Next up, is three-year senior Arianne Roy from Petit-Rocher, NB. Arianne arrived at RNS in Grade 10 and never looked back. From the day she arrived, Arianne put in work every single day to get better. In the gym and on the ice, this two-way defensemen helped lift our program to new heights during her time on the hill. Away from the of the rink, this young woman can always bring a smile to your face and provides so much joy to our community. Enjoy her story!

I started playing hockey when I was in the 4th Grade. Before that, I played ringette for several years and got my start on the ice in a local CanSkate program in my hometown. I eventually made the switch from ringette to hockey because ringette in my area was starting to lose interest and I had ambitions of playing more competitively. I used to always watch my brother and his friends down the street play hockey, so in Grade 4 I decided to play both ringette and hockey and see what the game was all about. After that year, my Mom asked me to choose between the two sports. I thought I would have more of a future in hockey, so I stuck with it and fell in love with the game.

My role on the ice is unique because I really enjoy being a solid two-way defenseman. I can certainly take advantage of the opportunities given to me on offense, but I also get a thrill from making a big defensive play and enjoy shutting down opposing players. I work hard each game to use my strength as a skater to make good plays and focus on executing a good first pace in order to give my team success.

I think my teammates and coaches would describe me as an energizer. I try to bring energy to the room, to the ice, and to our practices all the time. At times, they might say I am a bit crazy because I have so much energy, and sometimes they can’t understand my English, but I also hope they would say I am someone that they can come to if they need to talk or if they are dealing with something difficult. I pride myself on being a good friend and someone that can be supportive in difficult times.

I was inspired to move away from home and attend RNS when I realized that my friends and teammates at home did not have the same ambitions as me to play hockey at the next level. I knew if I wanted to get better and be pushed every day that I would need to put myself in a new environment where I could be challenged by my teammates and my coaches. I was never afraid of leaving home, this was actually something I always wanted, but it wasn’t until I started to get involved with the Hockey New Brunswick program that I realized how good the other players in the province were and recognized my own goals of being one of the top players in the province.

I have actually really enjoyed having my younger brother join me at RNS this year. We used to fight a lot when we were younger, but ever since I started playing hockey we have become much closer. We have played on the same teams several times and now team up to pick on our little sister. We work out together in the summer and even work at the same job, so we have grown pretty close over the past few years. It has been nice having him on campus for my senior year and feels like I have an extra little piece of home with me at RNS.

Next year, I have plans to attend Concordia University and study Biochemistry. I am also very excited to suit up for the Stingers and to play for Coach Chu and her staff. After my undergraduate degree, I have aspirations of pursuing a career in Medicine.

If I could give any advice to someone considering coming to RNS, I would encourage them to enjoy their time at the school because it flies by. I would also remind them to make the most of their experience and embrace the opportunities that RNS has to offer in hockey, but also academically and in community activities. I would also tell them to make sure they take advantage of the experience of being on the Prep Girls team. Do not take it for granted and make sure you work hard every day to get better and help make the program better for the next generation.

Coach Blackmore and Coach McCallum extend a sincere Thank You to Arianne for her commitment and dedication to the Prep Girls Hockey program during her three years at RNS. The note that her contributions have helped the program reach new heights. They go on to remind her that she will be dearly missed next year, but that they look forward to following your success as a Stinger for the next 4-5 years.

Welcome to the RNS Prep Girls Hockey Alumni Family Arianne!
