Meet Heidi Lauwerijssen '20

Up next, learn about senior forward and legendary dual-sport athlete Heidi Lauwerijssen. Heidi arrived at RNS in Grade 10 from Kensington, Prince Edward Island. A proud islander, Heidi is a hard-working team-first player who has played in every situation over the course of her time as a Riverhawk. She is an unfailingly reliable defensive forward, who also put up impressive points consistently each season. Heidi’s ability to soccer a record number of goals on the soccer pitch and her willingness to do whatever she could for her teams to be successful was nothing short of impressive. Enjoy her story!

I started playing hockey when I was about 7 years old, so I have been playing for 10 years. Before I started playing hockey, I was in figure skating. I skated with my sister for 3 years and then we both decided to try hockey. After playing hockey and doing figure skating for a year I decided I liked hockey more and switched over and my twin sister, Paige, decided to stay with figure skating.

Growing up, juggling soccer and hockey was always a task. In a house with four children who were all equally as busy, my Mom has always organized our athletic and extra-curricular schedules on a calendar. I feel that her great organization skills have rubbed off on me. Every time I have to miss class for sports I am adamant about talking to my teachers beforehand and getting my classwork. I also try and stay healthy. I always tried to get enough sleep and to eat as healthy as I can.

My greatest role model growing up was undoubtedly my Dad. He was one of the most hardworking people I knew and if he set his mind to something he always got it done. He also has a great personality, caring for people around him and always making them laugh. My Dad was also my soccer coach growing up and he always told stories about all the fun and success he had with soccer, so I wanted to be just like him.

I think my style of play and role on the team is unique because I am a solid two-way player. I create chances and score some goals in the offensive zone but more importantly, I commit to always backchecking hard. I ensure that there is a high forward in the offensive zone if we do not have control of the puck. I am also a solid player on the penalty kill as I block shots and have an active stick to cut off passing lanes.

I think my teammates and coaches would describe me as a humble, hardworking, team player. I always give my best effort at everything I do whether that's in the gym or on the ice. I do not give up on puck battles and give it everything when I am on the ice. I care about my teammates making sure that every time I am with them they have a good time.

One of the greatest highlights of being at RNS as been playing soccer. After my first year in Grade 10, I was awarded the Most Valuable Player award. This was a big accomplishment as it was only my first year and I was one of the younger players on the team. Again in Grade 12, I was named Most Valuable Player, but the highlight from this year was being named captain. This season, I had the opportunity to take on a bigger leadership role and I am proud of the growth I experienced as a student-athlete from this opportunity.

Next year, I am planning to study sciences at the University of New Brunswickin Fredericton. I am also incredibly excited about the opportunity to play soccer for the Reds.

If I could give someone attending RNS any advice it would be to make the most out of everything you do and to not be afraid to try new things. You only get these chances once in your life so make the best out of them. High school goes by so fast and it is the memories and friendships you have created that will last a lifetime.

Coach Blackmore and Coach McCallum extend a sincere Thank You to Heidi for her commitment and dedication to the Prep Girls Hockey program during her three years at RNS. The note that her contributions have helped the program reach new heights. They go on to remind her that she will be dearly missed next year, but that they look forward to following your success on the pitch as a Red in the future.
