Meet Kyla Bent '20

Our final installment of the ‘Meet our Seniors’ series explores the experience of a four-year senior and co-captain, Kyla Bent. Kyla is smooth skating defensemen from Halifax, Nova Scotia who arrived at RNS in Grade 9 with a dream of playing NCAA hockey in the future. With a relentless work ethic and a drive to get better every single day, Kyla will be graduating from RNS in June and heading off to New Hampshire to realize her dreams. She is a humble young woman who has overcome adversity and challenges to become an even stronger student-athlete. Enjoy her story!

I first started playing hockey when I was five years old, but I have been on skates since before I could even walk as my Mom used to take me out on the ice for free skates every afternoon. I was inspired to start playing hockey after watching my older brother Kelly play for so long. My Dad was actively involved in coaching and my brother continued to play at a higher level, so I found myself always at the rink and looking up to him as a role model.

My style of play is unique because although I play defense, I consider myself to be a much more offensive defenseman. While I certainly appreciate and take care of the responsibilities I have at both ends of the ice, I get my rush from creating offensive opportunities and jumping up into the play. I pride myself on using my speed to get involved in the play and on getting pucks through to the net.

I think my teammates would describe me as a supportive teammate, but also as someone who is going to hold you accountable at all times. I believe accountability is essential on a team, especially if you are looking to get better every day like we are. As a team captain, it was important that we worked to find ways to keep each other accountable for our effort and for our actions each day. This created an environment of care for one another and one of trust. I also think my teammates would say I helped keep the energy up in the dressing room and on the ice during practice and games all season. While accountability is important, so is having fun and I love finding ways to make my teammates laugh and have a good time at the rink.

One of my most memorable experiences in hockey so far was a game at the 2019
Canada Winter Games in Red Deer where Team Nova Scotia took on Team Alberta. This was a game I will never forget because it was televised on TSN, the entire game was back and forth action. Alberta went on to win the Gold medal at the games, so it was exciting to have such a good game against such a strong opponent. The entire Canada Games experience was one I will cherish forever.

Next year, I am incredibly excited to attend the University of New Hampshire and suit up for the Wildcats in the Hockey East Division of the NCAA. While at UNH, I am excited to work towards an undergraduate degree in Sciences with the hope of someday becoming a nurse.

If I could write a letter to my younger self who was heading off to RNS, I would tell them to be easier on yourself and not take everything so seriously all the time. I have come to learn that it is ok not to achieve everything you want in life and that failure is the best way to grow as a student-athlete. At RNS, some of the most challenging experiences I have faced have turned out to be some of my most memorable experiences.

Coach Blackmore and Coach McCallum extend a sincere Thank You to Kyla for her commitment and dedication to the Prep Girls Hockey program during her four years at RNS. They note that her contributions have helped the program reach new heights and remarkable success. They go on to state that she will be dearly missed next year, but that they look forward to following her success as a Wildcat at UNH for the next 4 years.
