Rothesay Netherwood School Students Semi-Finalists in International Technovation World Summit

RNS team develops ‘Indono’ app to combat destructive fast-fashion textile waste, promote sustainability, and help those in need

Rothesay, NB (June 25, 2021) – Four students from Rothesay Netherwood School are semi-finalists for the Technovation World Summit awards taking place virtually August 12-13, 2021.

RNS team Effervescent, composed of Emily Kay ‘22, Jenna Kong ‘21, Laura Thompson ‘21, and Angela Xu ‘21 created and coded an app called ‘Indono,’ which helps reduce textile waste by pairing non-profit organizations with those looking to donate gently used clothing items.

“Indono takes a technological approach to combat pollution in fast fashion,” says Effervescent team member Laura Thompson. “Our app is a missing link, easing accessibility between shelters, charities, and community members by providing a platform where non-profit groups can create lists of items they need so people can donate appropriately.”

Fast fashion is becoming the acceptable way to produce clothing; however, many items are made unethically, with enormous amounts of textile waste ending up in landfills.

“We surveyed the community and found that many people don’t donate their clothes because they don’t know where their donations are going,” says Emily Kay, Effervescent team member. “Using the Indono app, users can see a list of clothing items charities need, so they’ll know their donations are really going to help someone.”

Technovation is a global tech education non-profit that empowers young women, ages 10-18, to be leaders, creators, and problem-solvers by coding apps that address real-world problems. Participation in Technovation was a 12-week commitment for four RNS teams (16 students in total) involved. Students worked with and learned from industry experts in their fields from J.D. Irving, Limited, Hemmings House Pictures, ConnexionWorks, and NBCC.

“Every Wednesday night, the students had Zoom meetings with some incredible local mentors and leading experts,” says Tammy Earle, RNS Director of Technology and Learning Initiatives. “The Technovation program fosters entrepreneurship for females in innovation, coding, and business. We are proud to have been able to offer this unique and exceptional learning experience this year and are very proud of all of our teams.”

Teams from RNS placed first, second, and third in the Technovation New Brunswick regional competition, with the Effervescent team advancing as Canadian semi-finalists. National semi-finalists worldwide will share their innovative ideas before a panel of international judges later this summer at the Technovation World Summit.
