Rothesay Netherwood School Student Named 2022 Loran Award Finalist

Grade 12 RNS student Cole Gauthier is one of only two NB students vying for Canada’s largest, most comprehensive four-year undergraduate award, valued at $100,000.

Rothesay, NB (January 20, 2022) – Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS) Grade 12 student Cole Gauthier has been named a 2022 Loran Finalist, making him a candidate for the 2022 Loran Award, one of Canada’s most prestigious post-secondary education prizes.

Valued at $100,000 over four years, the Loran Award is much more than a scholarship. Students chosen as Loran Scholars not only receive up to $10,000 in tuition waiver per year from any one of the 25 partner universities, along with a $10,000 living stipend per year, they also get one-on-one mentorship, up to $14,000 in funding for tri-sectoral summer work experiences, as well as a week-long orientation expedition with Outward Bound.

Gauthier is one of 90 finalists chosen from an applicant pool of 5,174 students from more than 1,400 schools across the country. Only the top 6% of applicants (335 semi-finalists) were invited to participate in the online semi-final interviews held throughout November and December. From here, Gauthier will take part in Virtual National Selections in February and March, and wait to hear if he will be named a 2022 Loran Scholar. Each year, the Loran Scholars Foundation grants up to 36 Loran Awards. Those not named are each eligible to receive a $5,000 finalist award.

“I am incredibly honoured and excited to have made it to the final stages of the Loran Award and look forward to meeting other finalists and scholars,” said Gauthier. “I hope that Loran will allow me to make more connections and seek additional opportunities than I would have been able to on my own.

“The Loran Award application process is unique in that it focuses on general character attributes such as ‘integrity, courage, grit and personal autonomy,’ rather than solely on academic or athletic ability,” he adds. “While demanding, the thorough application and interview process provided me with a chance to reflect, get a better understanding of who I am and what drives me.”

Paul McLellan, RNS Head of School, adds that “Cole has been a student here for seven years, and during this time he has grown and developed in ways that few students get to experience. From his self-awareness regarding learning, relationships and interests, to his confidence and willingness to contribute to our community through public speaking, the arts, and student advocacy. Cole’s character, courage, and creativity have combined in ways that will leave an indelible mark on our community. We are all rooting for Cole to win a prestigious Loran Award, but regardless of the outcome he will leave an impressive legacy at RNS.”

Gauthier’s legacy is especially evident on the school’s debate team that he has been involved with since Grade 8. In addition to being named a Loran Finalist, Gauthier recently earned the title of 2021-2022 New Brunswick High School Debate Champion with partner, RNS Grade 10 student Bex Finnegan, and was awarded top individual speaker in last weekend’s provincial championship.

The Loran Scholars Foundation looks for graduating high school and Cégep students “who demonstrate strength of character, commitment to service, and leadership potential. In a time of immense change and challenge, these finalists offer us all hope for a brighter future, having shown grit and resilience, finding ways to make the most of these extraordinary circumstances and meaningfully serve their communities in the interest of positive change.”

RNS graduate Heather Chisholm ’20 was Rothesay Netherwood School’s first Loran Scholar and is currently studying at McGill University in Montréal, QC.
