This course emphasizes the further development of reading, writing, thinking, and oral communication skills in preparation for a dynamic experience in the Senior School. It also fosters the skills of creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking on a range of shared digital platforms. Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including plays, poems, short stories, and novels. An important focus will be the effective use of spoken and written language in a broad range of venues: essays, discussions, debates, creative writing, blogs, video, websites, group projects, recitations, and presentations. As well, the fundamental skills required for active reading and listening will be emphasized. Students require a credit in Grade 8 English (or equivalent) to register for this course.
 
Grade 10 English
(ENG102) 1.0 credit
 
This course exposes students to a wide range of significant literary texts in the four major genres and thereby challenges them to become more active readers and more creative critical thinkers. Through writing critical responses to literature, fictional narratives, poetry, reflective compositions, research essays, reports, and presentations, students will refine the fundamentals of effective writing. They will also be encouraged to interact effectively in formal and informal discussions and presentations to hone their skills at speaking publicly and listening thoughtfully. Students require a credit in Grade 9 English (or equivalent) to register for this course.
 
Grade 11 IB English SL/HL
(ENG111) 1.0 credit
 
This course is comprised of two major units in which a total of six major works are studied in depth. Students’ understanding of world literature, critical literary theory, historical and cultural context, as well as approaches to writing from a variety of periods and places, are developed further through their reading, writing, oral communication, and critical thinking skills. The course is designed to prepare all students for the second year of the IB English program, in either the Standard Level or the Higher Level course. Students require a credit in Grade 10 English (or equivalent) to register for this course.
 
Grade 12 IB English SL
(ENG122) 1.0 credit
 
As the second year of our IB English program at the Standard Level, this course is comprised of two major units in which a total of five major works of literature are studied in depth. Critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills are developed further throughout the year to enable students to broaden their reading experience and their knowledge and understanding of literature around the world. Students require a credit in Grade 11 IB English (or equivalent) to register for this course.
 
Grade 12 IB English HL
(ENG121) 1.0 credit
 
As the second year of our IB English program at the Higher Level, this course is comprised of two major units, Detailed Study and Literary Genres, in which a total of eight major pieces of literature are studied in depth, in accordance with IB guidelines. The pace of study and the level of analysis and discussion are demanding and lead to a detailed, sophisticated consideration of a range of works. Students are expected to work independently and to demonstrate initiative in their studies as they further develop their ability to speak, write, read, and listen effectively through their examination of rich, demanding texts from a variety of genres and periods. Prerequisites include a credit in Grade 11 IB English (or equivalent) to register for this course, as well as the approval of the Head of English.
