Meet David Alugo '24

By Adam McDougall

My family is from Nigeria, but I was born in Dublin, Ireland where I lived from 2006-2014 before moving to Quispamsis, New Brunswick. I’m here with my family – my parents came here for work – so they’ve been living here, too. Where I lived in Ireland was quite small, and there was a lot of farmland. The biggest difference between there and Quispamsis is that here in New Brunswick, you don’t see that at all. Another difference is that, in Quispamsis, the people are a lot friendlier than back in Ireland. My parents came from nothing in Nigeria, so it’s always important that my last name means more than my first name; hustling for my last name, making my parents proud, and being able to be in a better position than they were is what motivates me most.

I know that I’m at the right place at RNS. RNS basketball is a family. Sometimes, from the outside, the basketball team can look a little intimidating, but when you’re one of the people in that team environment, you learn that you’re brothers, even though we all come from such different places. I really just love it so much because we’re all there to make each other better, whether that’s on the court, in the classroom, or anywhere else.

Even though our team is younger this year – and me being the youngest – our mindset hasn’t changed. In fact, I see it as a bonus because we’re going to grow together and we have a couple years to come together even more. We’re lifting weights together, learning in the classroom together, on the court together, and so the chemistry we want to create has already started building. We’re young, which most people will see as a negative, but it is actually a positive if you’re thinking about the future. We always think that we, as a young team, are building towards a future together.

When I was younger, I took drum lessons, so now I love to play the drums and make beats with my hands when I have spare time. I also love to cook basically anything I can. I actually have a cooking page on Instagram (@chefdavidocooks for those of you curious), so I also love cooking in my spare time.
